the story

However long or short a child’s life may be, The Donna Louise Hospice for Children & Young People is there to support every member of the family, every step of the way.

The Donna Louise supports hundreds of families across Staffordshire and South Cheshire who are living with the heart-breaking knowledge that they will almost certainly outlive their child.

Until recently, the hospice was not able to support young people beyond their 19th birthday. So rather than a milestone to look forward to, approaching adulthood became a time of great stress and uncertainty for families. The Donna Louise therefore made a game-changing decision to expand their services to include teens as they become adults, and promised to be there for families for as long as they need them.

As a charity that relies almost exclusively on the generosity of the local community to make their work possible, this was not a decision that was taken lightly. Inspired by the need to continue caring for children and young people into adulthood, The Butterflies project was born…

The partners’ pledge

The Butterflies is a bold collaboration between Staffordshire businesses, the local ceramics industry, education, charity, art and engineering – all working together to bring about the largest ever locally produced ceramic art installation in Stoke-on-Trent. Every business and individual collaborating to bring the art installation to life has donated time, expertise and often materials to make this vision a reality and raise significant funds for The Donna Louise.

We are passionate about supporting the children, young people and their families at the hospice and equally passionate about demonstrating that our community is a brilliant place to live – where people care for one another – that’s one of the things that makes our city special.

The city is also immensely proud to be known worldwide as The Potteries, a cultural icon of ceramics and art – so there can be no more fitting way to celebrate the very best of our region than a ceramic art installation that showcases our past, present, and – like the butterfly emerging from its chrysalis – an inspiring future.

Why butterflies?

Butterflies represent endurance, change, hope and life. They are often a symbol of fragile and short lives – much like the lives of the children and young people at The Donna Louise, whose precious time is cut short by illness.

By buying a butterfly you can help transform a young life. You can help The Donna Louise continue their amazing care for children, young people and their families and help to ensure the certainty of knowing The Donna Louise will always be there for them.
