As the second week of ‘Taking Flight’ construction draws to a close, we get a sneak peek at the spectacular dome-shaped “cage” that will showcase the butterflies.
Towering an impressive 6.3m above the fountain at its centre, the cage is majestic. It dominates the skyline, standing statuesque as it gazes out across the Italian Gardens towards Perseus on the lake shore.
Designed by engineers at KMF Group in partnership with Gladman Developments and Patera Engineering (who made the steel structure), the dome took 3 days to erect and will showcase the stunning 5000 ceramic blue butterflies along with thousands of stainless-steel butterflies.
Teams from Patera Engineering, KMF Group and JCB were hard at work well into the light evenings to complete the mammoth task of raising the structure from the ground and were assisted by a team from PM Training.
There is almost a silent strength to the dome as she sits, patiently in wait for the butterflies that will descend upon the gardens early next week.
‘Taking Flight’ will be on display in the Upper Flower Garden at Trentham Gardens from 25th May until 3rd November.
You can own one of these unique, hand-crafted butterflies and receive one free entry into the gardens to see your butterfly on display before it takes flight to your home at the end of the installation.Buy a Butterfly
